Android will be the leading platform to support highest number of applications

According to ABI Research, operating system Android will account for 58 per cent of the 56 billion smartphone applications which are estimated to be downloaded in 2013.

Apple’s iOS, will have a share of about 33 per cent in the total applications to be downloaded in 2013. Windows Phone and BlackBerry will be ranked third and fourth with a market share of 4 per cent and 3 per cent market, respectively.

Further, based on Android's lead and the improved ecosystem for application building for the platform, ABI Research expects increasing number of smartphone application developers to exhibit preference for building applications for Android-based smartphones.

ABI forecasts that in 2013, Apple's iPad will account for a 75 per cent share of the tablet application as against Android’s share of 17 per cent. This market share would be independent of the Android fork used by Amazon’s Kindle Fire tablets, which will command a market share of 4 per cent. Windows tablet will account for 2 per cent of downloads.

Aapo Markkanen, senior analyst, ABI Research, says, “Arguably the most pressing issue for Google is how much of Android's handset momentum will ultimately trickle down to tablets, where Apple is holding the fort remarkably well.”

He adds, “Although much has been made of the issue of Android fragmentation and forks. The existence of the Kindle Fire could actually help the platform gain ground in tablets, as it provides a draw for developers to build for the platform. It is worth remembering that Android’s so-called fragmentation problem isn’t only a problem, but that it has a certain upside as well.”

The Reason for Samsung's Dominance: $11 Billion on Marketing & $10.6 Billion on R&D

Samsung holds the crown of the world's largest phone maker and the world's largest smartphone maker. They didn't get there because they make excellent and appealing devices. It also wasn't just luck. Nope. Samsung is dominating because they are pushing forward with a hyper-aggressive marketing and R&D budget. In fact, Samsung spent more money on advertising than HTC’s entire revenue for a year. Sammy spent $11 Billion dollars last year just in marketing. Here's a quote with some more specifics,

Code: [Select]
Samsung’s 2012 marketing war chest was 38 percent higher than last year, and a staggering 6.8 times larger than what the company spent back in 2005. To put this figure in perspective, the 2012 marketing expenses were 6.5 percent of Samsung’s total sales. Moreover, Samsung spent more money on promoting its products than HTC’s entire revenue in a year.

People at Samsung are aware that they owe their good fortunes to marketing:

“Samsung’s focus on marketing was the main reason the company was so successful last year,” said a source inside Samsung, asking not to be identified.

Of course, great marketing will only get you so far if you offer a crappy product. Although some will argue Samsung sometimes has a "plastic-y" feel to their devices, not everyone agrees with this. Regardless, it's hard to argue they don't offer cutting edge features. In fact, many of the most useful things that consumers can do on a smartphone OS can be found on the Samsung Galaxy of products, and this is even beyond what you find on stock Android. Plus, Samsung seems to always push the edge on the hardware inside their devices as well. From brilliant displays to powerful processors, Samsung develops a lot of the components for their devices themselves. They are constantly pushing to innovate both in software and hardware.

These innovations aren't cheap either. Last year Samsung spent almost as much on Research & Development as they did on marketing, to the tune of $10.6 Billion dollars. Their success seems to prove the old saying, "It takes money to make money." I wonder what their budget will be like this year?

The Lava E-Tab Xtron’s 7-inch IPS display has a resolution of 1024x600 pixels, not too bad for a budget 7-inch device. Samsung Galaxy S4 preview: Take two

Number four was unveiled last week to set a new kind of fever brewing, after briefly easing some of the pre-announcement tension. Carriers are tripping over themselves to secure deals, while customers have been forming mile-long virtual queues at stores already taking preorders.

Samsung Galaxy S4 official photos
As for us, we were lucky to finally get some quality one-on-one time with the Samsung Galaxy S4 and run a few proper tests. We were impressed at the announcement event, and the S4 looks quite comfortable with the weight of expectations. But millions of people will settle for nothing less than the ultimate upgrade, and the stakes are rarely higher than that.

Samsung Galaxy S4 at a glance:

  • General: Optional 2G/3G/LTE connectivity
  • Form factor: Touchscreen bar phone
  • Dimensions: 136.6 x 69.8 x 7.9mm, 130 g
  • Display: 4.99" 16M-color Super AMOLED HD capacitive touchscreen with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels (441ppi)
  • Chipset: Exynos 5410 Octa / Snapdragon 600
  • CPU: 1.6 GHz Quad-core ARM Cortex-A15 and 1.2 GHz quad-core ARM Cortex-A7 / 1.9GHz Krait 300
  • GPU: PowerVR SGX 544MP3 / Adreno 320
  • RAM: 2GB
  • OS: Android 4.2.2 (Jelly Bean)
  • Memory: 16/32GB/64GB storage, microSD card slot
  • Still camera: 13 megapixel auto-focus camera, face detection, touch focus and image stabilization, Dual Shot, Cinema Photo; 2MP front facing camera, video-calls
  • Video camera: Full HD (1080p) video recording at 30fps
  • Connectivity: Wi-Fi a/b/g/n/ac, Wi-Fi hotspot, Bluetooth 4.0, standard microUSB port with MHL features (TV Out, USB host), GPS receiver with A-GPS and GLONASS, 3.5mm audio jack, NFC, Infrared port
  • Battery: 2600 mAh
  • Misc: TouchWiz UI, Impressively rich video/audio codec support, built-in accelerometer, Smart stay and Smart rotation eye-tracking, Smart pause, Smart scroll, S Health, Air Gestures, humidity sensor, temperature sensor
There's little on the outside to suggest a massive upgrade over the Galaxy S III. On the other hand, the spec sheet implies a significant leap forward, improving on just about every aspect of the hardware and adding plenty of new software features. As usual, the truth is somewhere in between and our job today is to put a finger on it.

With the competition hardly sitting on their hands either, the Galaxy S4 is in for a fierce battle if it's to keep the Android crown in the Samsung trophy cabinet. The Sony Xperia Z is doing well to capitalize on the head start, while the HTC One has a wicked unibody design and no less impressive specs. A massive challenge indeed, but the Koreans have never been afraid of those.
Let's see how this one pans out - the hardware inspection begins right after the break.

Some Sony Xperia Z handsets reportedly suffering sudden death

A number of Sony Xperia Z users have reported their devices suffering from sudden death. Apparently, Sony's flagship has been shutting down for no apparent reason with subsequent efforts to bring it back to life proving unsuccessful, save for a hard reset in a few cases.

There is no particular reason for the occurrence. Some users have blamed low battery for the issue, but others have had their Xperia Z expire with plenty of charge left in its battery.
Sony has acknowledged the issue and promised that a fix is in the works. It will be delivered to the users via an upcoming software update.

MWC 2013: Asus overview

Other companies want to sell you multiple devices – at least a phone and a tablet. Asus wants to sell you just one device to do both jobs. This is the idea behind both the Padfone Infinity and the Fonepad.

The Asus Padfone Infinity builds on the Padfone 2's specs and addresses the biggest issue of its predecessor – the resolution of the tablet dock screen is now 1920 x 1200, for notably sharper imagery. 1280x800 stretched across 10.1” just doesn’t cut it anymore.
The Padfone Infinity is going after HTC phones with an aircraft-grade aluminum unibody and double-anodized finish (which will hopefully mean no more chipped surfaces like the iPhone and HTC One S experienced).
Asus also beefed up the computing power and battery capacity – there’s a Snapdragon 600 chipset inside the Padfone and the battery inside the tablet dock triples the battery life (the Padfone 2 tablet dock “only” doubled it).
The Asus Fonepad does things slightly differently – it combines the aspects of a phone and a tablet, but there are no detachable parts, it’s just a 7” tablet. It’s made of aluminum too and hovers around the same price point as the Nexus 7 tablet - €220 in Europe and $250 in APAC. The Fonepad, however, uses an Intel Atom Z2420 CPU, rather than ARM design.
Update, February 26: Asus showcased the Padfone Infinity and Fonepad at their booth today, so we could spend more time with them. We've added more impressions and hands-on videos for the two. Also at the booth were the Memo Pad Smart ME301T (an affordable 10.1" Android tablet) and the Transformer AiO (a Windows 8/Android 4.1 tablet/all-in-one computer, it's easier to show that it is to explain).

Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 hands-on: First look

Samsung is trying really hard to not leave an empty spot in the mobile market, so the Galaxy Note 8.0 announcement shouldn't be a surprise. The compact tablet follows the same design guidelines as all the other Samsung high-end devices announced in the last year or so and has set its sights on the Apple iPad Mini.
Samsung has given the Galaxy Note 8.0 an S Pen and the slew of Touch Wiz-exclusive software features to help it in its battles. Driving them is the company's Exynos 4 Quad 4412 chipset with four 1.6GHz Cortex-A9 CPUs, Mali 400MP4 GPU and 2GB of RAM.

Here's a quick view of the Galaxy Note 8.0 features list.

Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 at a glance:

  • General: Optional 2G/3G/4G connectivity
  • Form factor: Tablet
  • Dimensions: 210.8 x 135.9 x 8 mm, 338 g
  • Display: 8" 16M-color TFT capacitive touchscreen with a resolution of 800 x 1280 pixels (189ppi)
  • Stylus: S Pen, 1024 pressure levels, hover functionality
  • Chipset: Exynos 4412 Quad
  • CPU: Quad-core ARM Cortex-A9 1.6 GHz processor
  • GPU: Mali-400MP
  • RAM: 2GB
  • OS: Android 4.1.1 (Jelly Bean)
  • Memory: 16/32GB storage, microSD card slot
  • Still camera: 5 megapixel auto-focus camera, face detection and Best faces feature, touch focus and image stabilization; 1.3MP front facing camera, video-calls
  • Video camera: Full HD (1080p) video recording at 30fps
  • Connectivity: Wi-Fi a/b/g/n, Wi-Fi hotspot, Bluetooth 4.0, standard microUSB port with MHL features (TV Out, USB host), GPS receiver with A-GPS and GLONASS, 3.5mm audio jack, NFC
  • Battery: 4600 mAh
  • Misc: Nature UX, Extremely rich video/audio codec support, built-in accelerometer, multi-touch input, proximity sensor, gyroscope sensor, Smart stay and Smart rotation eye-tracking, Reading mode
Sounds familiar, doesn't it? The Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 is little more than an upsized Galaxy Note II. Or is that a downsized Galaxy Note 10.1? The only differences are the new S-Pen software features that come with Android 4.1.2 and the latest TouchWiz, but those have already been made available to the Note 8.0 predecessors.
The screen is of the TFT PLS variety and the resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels sounds like last season's stuff. This results in 189 pixels per inch, which may not sound like match, but it's still more than the iPad Mini's 162 ppi.
As for the camera, it's a 5MP sensor capable of shooting 1080p videos @ 30fps, coupled with an LED flash. Join us on the next page to learn more about the hardware features of the Galaxy Note 8.0, a compact tablet which can make phone calls.

MWC 2013: Sony Xperia Tablet Z and Xperia ZL

Even though Sony had no product announcement to make here at the MWC in Barcelona, its booth is drawing crowds. The already announced Xperia Z and ZL flagships are on display there, along with the international version of the Xperia Tablet Z.
The Xperia Z was the headliner at CES and is already available in some markets, even more to follow this Friday. Quite predictably though, the Xperia Z and the soon to be released Xperia ZL are still getting plenty of attention and people wait in line to play with them.

The real newsworthy piece of gear however is the Xperia Tablet Z. Both the Wi-Fi-only and LTE-enabledversions will become available before this quarter ends. Previously, the Xperia Tablet Z was announcedonly for Japan.
We spent some quality time at Sony's booth and managed to play with all of the gadgets. Since we already know everything there is about the Xperia Z, we'll be focusing on the Xperia Tablet Z and the Xperia ZL smartphone.

Creators of Bastion reveal their next game: Transistor

Creators of Bastion reveal their next game: Transistor

Gamers in here may already be well acquainted with Bastion, one of the best RPG to have come out in recent times. It was recently ported over to iOS, which we reviewed a while back and found it to be just as good as it was on the PC or the consoles.
Now the developers of Bastion — Supergiant Games – have revealed their upcoming game called Transistor, set to launch in 2014. The game takes place in a futuristic city called Cloudbank, where a young woman named Red is attacked by a mysterious group of assailants with an equally mysterious weapon, called Transistor. She survives the attack and is now in possession of the weapon. She then embarks on a journey to find out more about the group that attacked her and the weapon, while they are out to retrieve it back from her at any cost.
The game features a top-down isometric 3D design, similar to Bastion. The gameplay seems to primarily revolve around the weapon Transistor, which seemingly has multiple powerful attacks. The level design looks gorgeous and the soundtrack sounds like it’s going to be amazing, just as it was with Bastion.
As mentioned before, the game is set to launch some time in 2014 but no platforms have been specified so far. After playing Bastion, I have high hopes for Transistor and it looks like it would live up my expectations. You can watch the first trailer below.

NVIDIA reveals their Tegra roadmap

NVIDIA reveals their Tegra roadmap

At their GPU Technology Conference in San Jose, NVIDIA revealed the roadmap for future Tegra-series processors, among other things. The roadmap highlights NVIDIA’s plans for 2013 and 2014 with two future processors, Logan and its successor, Parker, which continue NVIDIA’s tradition of naming them after the real last names of superheroes.
Logan will be the successor to Wayne, more commonly known as the Tegra 4 chipset, and will be appearing in devices in early 2014. It will feature a quad-core ARM Cortex A15 MPCore alongside a low power companion core. It will also be the first Tegra chip to include CUDA cores, NVIDIA’s solution for parallel computing on the GPU, and will be based on a Kepler architecture, similar to the desktop GPUs that NVIDIA makes.
Logan will also be introducing support for CUDA 5.0, the latest version of CUDA, as well as OpenGL 4.3, which brings new features such as tessellation, computer shaders and geometry shaders over OpenGL ES 3.0.
Next is Parker, which will use the upcoming Denver CPU with 64-bit support and the upcoming Maxwell series of GPU. All the advancements in Logan will be carried forward to Parker. Parker is expected to arrive in devices by 2015.
NVIDIA also showcased an mITX-like board called Kayla, which features a Tegra 3 SoC and a low power Kepler GPU, presumably from Logan. This board is designed primarily for developers to test their applications, specifically for the new CUDA functionality that will be introduced from Logan onwards. Not much details about Kayla are available at the moment.

Oppo officially outs a stunning-looking black Find 5

Oppo officially outs a stunning-looking black Find 5

Oppo hast just announced a black version of the Oppo Find 5 droid, adding an additional color to its flagship offering, and in our opinion it looks even more magnificent as its white sibling.
As you can see from the photo above, the black version of the Find 5 actually looks a bit more like dark gray, but it still oozes class. Oppo will start selling the Find 5 in black starting April 1 in China. A timeframe for the international launch of the new color variation hasn't been disclosed yet.
In our in-depth Oppo Find 5 review, we shared we are quite fond of the phone's design, and the new dark color makes it all that more appealing. The 5", 1080p droid beast is powered by a 1.7GHz Snapdragon S4 Pro APQ8064 quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM and packs a 13MP camera with LED flash at the back.
Pricing of the black version is also unknown, but there's no reason it should be different from the price of white Find 5 ($499).
Finally, CNMO.com got hold of the phone and have taken some hands-on pictures with it. You can feast your eyes on them below.

Jelly Bean update for Optimus 4X HD

Jelly Bean update for Optimus 4X HD, Optimus L7 comes this month

LG has confirmed via its official German blog that it's planning to release a Jelly Bean update for its last year high-end and mid-range offerings - the Optimus 4X HD and Optimus L7.

More specifically, LG says it'll push Android 4.1.2 only to the unlocked versions of the devices. Presumably, those purchased under carrier subsidizing will have to wait for their carrier to approve of the update.
The Jelly Bean update will bring the UI optimizations of Project Butter and will make Google Now available. Newly added features include faster NFC transmission through Android Beam 2.0, Wi-Fi protected setup (WPS), as well as expandable notifications.
LG says the update will roll out by the end of March. Users will be able to update via LG's Mobile Support-Tool. You can find more detailed instructions on how to check and install the update by visiting the source link below.

Samsung Galaxy S4 gets priced in the UK, will cost you £529 SIM-free

Samsung's recently launched fourth-generation Galaxy S smartphone has been the talk of the town for its powerful specifications and amazing features. At the official announcement, Samsung Mobile chief JK Shin, mentioned the availability of the smartphone but did not mention anything about the pricing of their latest flagship.
The pricing of the Samsung Galaxy S4 is no longer a mystery as the device is said to cost $579 for the16GB model in US. Now, the pricing of the latest Galaxy S smartphone in UK has been revealed by an online listing and the smartphone will cost you £529 (about $800) for the 16 GB SIM-free model.
Furthermore, Samsung Galaxy S4 is available for free from T-Mobile, Orange, O2 and Vodafone on £31 per month plan and needless to say, a two year contract.
As we already showed you yesterday, the Galaxy S4 is currently priced at €660 over at Amazon DE, and similar pre-order prices are popping up across Europe.
Surprisingly, the pricing of the Galaxy S4 smartphone is identical to that of the iPhone 5 in UK. The demand for the latest flagship device from the South Korean manufacturer is on a rise and it will be interesting to see if the smartphone can outperform its predecessor in terms of sales figures.

Sony Xperia SP hands-on: First look

Sony Xperia SP hands-on: First look

Introduction

Sony created quite the stir in the Android high end with its Xperia Z flagship - a slick device of elegant design and impressive spec sheet. Today, it's looking to capitalize on that momentum with a new higher midrange offering in the face of the Xperia SP. Sony's most competitive devices have historically come from the midrange, so we're eager to see how the SP will do.
Sony has put a respectable 4.6-inch 720p display on the Xperia SP, which is powered by a dual-core Qualcomm MSM9860Pro chipset, 1GB of RAM, and Adreno 320 graphics. There's also a fresh looking transparent light strip at the bottom, which can be customized to serve notifications in various color combinations.

Sony Xperia SP official photo
Here's a quick view of the Sony Xperia SP feature list:

Sony Xperia SP at a glance:

  • General: 2G/3G/4G connectivity
  • Dimensions: 130.6 x 67.1 x 9.98 mm, 155 g
  • Display: 4.6" 16M-color TFT capacitive touchscreen with a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels (319ppi)
  • Chipset: Qualcomm MSM8960T
  • CPU: Dual-core ARM Krait 1.7 GHz processor
  • GPU: Adreno 320
  • RAM: 1GB
  • OS: Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean)
  • Memory: 8GB storage (5.8GB user-accessible), microSD card slot
  • Still camera: 8 megapixel auto-focus camera, HDR mode, panorama, face detection, touch focus and image stabilization; VGA front-facing camera, video calls
  • Video camera: Full HD (1080p) video recording
  • Connectivity: Wi-Fi a/b/g/n, Wi-Fi hotspot, Bluetooth 4.0, standard microUSB port with MHL features (TV Out, USB host), GPS receiver with A-GPS and GLONASS, 3.5mm audio jack, NFC
  • Battery: 2370 mAh
  • Misc: Sony custom UX, built-in accelerometer, multi-touch input, proximity sensor, gyroscope sensor, Glove mode, battery STAMINA mode, customizable ambient light strip, dedicated camera key
There's a clear line between today's midrange market and fullHD flagship territory, but the 720p resolution on the 4.6" display is not overly stretched, and results in a respectable pixel density of 319ppi. The Xperia SP also comes with the standard array of connectivity features, complete with LTE support.
